The very rare cylinder movement Numbered 620 was made by the Great Watchmaker Thomas Mudge, around 1765. He is recognised as possibly the worlds greatest watchmaker, developing the Lever escapment. He made few watches with his name on, because he was engaged in making watches for some of the well known makers of the time, such as Ellicott.
The watch is presented in modern solid gold pair cases, I'm sure made specially for this movement, and a later cream enamel dial (19th century). The movement number (620) dates it to around 1765 and makes it one of the last movements to be signed only by Thomas Mudge (rather that with his partner William Dutton).
MOVEMENT : Signed and numbered (620), the gilded cylinder movement is in fine condition and is running well. Beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock with blued steel centre. The screws are also blued and look original with no damage. Just a few scratches on the plate at the pillars.
DIAL : The large cream enamel dial is about 41.4mm in diameter. It is in perfect condition except for one light hairline running through the centre from 1 to 8 o'clock.
Nice matching blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Full hallmarks for 18 carat gold, London 1987, maker AGP. Some very light scratches on the back, otherwise perfect.
OUTER CASE : Matching marks to the inner, but 9 carat gold. Perfect condition.
This is a very rare opportunity to buy a watch by one of England's finest makers. While dealing in fine English antique watches for some years, I have seen more genuine Thomas Tompian movements offered that those of Thomas Mudge. This is a rare watch.
The watch has been appraised and authenticated by a well known and very reputable watch expert and Fellow of The British Horological Institute (FBHI). The written appraisal will be included with the watch.
